What is Animation?

The word “animation” stems from the Latin “animātiō” which means “the action of imparting life”.

Animation is an artistic medium in which images or objects are brought to life on screen. In other words, it is the art of making drawings or models come to life on film.

And, Anime is a style of animation originating in Japan. As of 2016, Japanese animation accounted for 60% of the world’s animated television shows.

Animation vs. Live-action

It is a common misconception that the Animated style of story-telling is not as good as the Live-action style. This could not be further from the truth. Animation is not only equal to Live-action style, but in many ways, they are better.

  • Animation can tell stories that Live-action could never tell.
  • Animation can be more visually creative than Live-action.
  • Animation can be more emotionally impactful than Live-action.
  • Animation can be more family-friendly than Live-action.

Animation is just for kids is a MYTH

Just because they have talking cars, talking fish, and talking toys and are mostly targeted at kids, it doesn’t mean that Animation is a kids’ genre.

Usually, adults who watch Animation would be criticized and will be told to grow up. The truth is, over time, there have been many animated movies or shows that are geared toward adults, with many of them offering a more sophisticated and mature story than what is typically seen in kids' movies.

Some of the best and my favorite Animated movies or shows include:

  • Finding Nemo(2004)
  • Inside Out (2015)
  • Up (2009)
  • Wall-E (2008)
  • Meet the Robinsons (2007)
  • Over the Hedge (2006)
  • Naruto (2002) & Naruto Shippuden (2007)
  • Arcane (2021)

Each of these and many more such movies or shows offers something unique and different and is proof that Animation is not just for kids. They can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

Animated movies are the best parenting lessons

Parenting is not an easy task, but it is made easier by Animated movies that can help parents teach their kids important life lessons. These movies can help kids learn about important topics such as friendship, family, love, and loss.

The animated movies or shows mentioned above or many other good ones have a very deep message that may not be understood by kids right away. Parents must help their kids understand the life lesson it is trying to teach. So, each kid can connect to these stories and grow up to be a better person.

Here are a few good animated movies or series and what it's briefly about.

  • Finding Nemo: This is about a father-son relationship and how far a father would go to save his son. It also teaches parents not to restrict their children and let them grow or fall on their own.
  • Up: This is a story about an old man’s loss, love, and moving on. It teaches us to help the elderly and most importantly never give up on our dreams.
  • Wall-E: This is a story about the importance of taking care of our planet and what might happen if we don’t.
  • Meet the Robinsons: This is a story about how to Keep Moving Forward in life, no matter what challenges you face.
  • Over the Hedge: This is a story about how to get along with others, even if they are different from you.
  • Inside Out: This is a story about the importance of all emotions, even negative ones like Sadness.
  • Naruto: This is a story about a young ninja who never gives up on his dream, no matter how many times he fails. Even each side character in this show has something to teach you.
  • Grave of the Fireflies: This one is of the best portrayals of the impact of War on people’s lives.

Conclusion

So, the next time you are looking for a movie to watch, don’t discount Animated movies just because you think they are for kids. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy them or even learn from them.
